Controlled chaos is the easiest way to describe to autotech room.
“The room is about half the size I would like it to be,” Autotech teacher Brian Gay said. “There are parts everywhere and everything gets shuffled and moved by the end of the week.”
The autotech room receives no funding from the school. The room operates by having students or Gay’s friends allow the autotech students to work on their cars.
“It’s taking a risk having students work on your car but you get free labor,” Gay said. “You buy the parts the car needs like oil and a valve and bring your car in and the students do the work for free because they’re learning.”
Autotech 1, earns the parts of car and see the physical parts. Autotech 2 and 3 are first and second hour and these are the classes that do the repairs or upgrades on car.
Gay is in a Porsche racing league, so some of his competitors that are good friends bring their Corvettes and Porsches to get updated, faster engines for racing.
“The room has two or three cars in it usually.” Gay said. “And will stay in here between a week or a month.”
The autotech room, since Gay has been in charge, has only had 12 female students complete an entire semester of the class. “The boys are good at scaring away all the girls in the class,” Gay said.
According to Gay about eight students have taken their experience in the autotech room to the real world to become professional technicians.
