Taylor Bell is a senior at East. This is her second year on staff and her first year as a staff photographer. Along with The Harbinger, she is on the swim team and gymnastics team. »
Seniors Joe Simmons, Joe Bahr, Sam Bihuniak, Henry LeGard and Connor Richardson wanted to do something big for the Olathe South game, so, they made a banner to get the SME students excited at games, with almost 200 dollars worth of fabric and paint.
“We thought it would be a good way to get people pumped up for parts of games.” Senior Joe Simmons said.
The boys picked up fabric from Joann’s and recruited the help of Mary Bahr, Joe Bahr’s mom, to sew the black fabric together. Once threaded, it made a sheet around 24 by 30. Using columbia blue paint, a giant “E” plastered the front of the banner.
Now the banner has seen almost every football and basketball game this year. It’s pulled out strategically at the games to get the crowd fired up.
“I’ve heard from players that it really pumps them up,” Senior Joe Bahr said, “we try to bring it out at key times to get them pumped up at the right time.”
The administrators support the boys, helping them hide the banner and pull it out when the seniors decide the time is right. Associate Principal Jeremy Higgins thinks that the banner is a great way to show school spirit.
“There are no other schools in the area (at least that I know of) that have a similar type banner.” Associate Principal Jeremy Higgins said. “I think that the banner was a great idea and I hope that future years will use the banner as well.”
