East to Host Annual Canned Food Drive

East will be hosting the annual canned food drive, along with with several other events, from Oct. 29 to Nov. 16. All proceeds will benefit the Johnson County Christmas Bureau.

In order to reach their goal of over 80,000 of cans there will be class, sport and club competitions each week according to senior class president Dane Erickson. Some of the competitions include Harbinger vs. Hauberk, football vs. soccer, coalition vs. SHARE and cheer vs. dance.

A new way to raise funds for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau this year is by selling blue and white stickers that say “SME” on them. Sophomore StuCo will be selling stickers before and after school for one dollar every day.

East is also bringing back something they haven’t done in 10 years: a school talent show. All of the money from the tickets sold at the talent show on Nov. 13 will also be donated to JCCB.

Another way to raise money for the drive is a 3 vs. 3 freshmen basketball tournament from 2 – 5 p.m. on Nov. 10 in the Main Gym at East. An announcement will be sent out in an email to all the freshmen with information on how to sign up. Each team must pay $15 to participate and the winning team can win up to $170 worth of gift cards.

“We hope to get a variety of items such as cans, boxed foods and ingredients that can be kept on shelves for long periods of time,” said student body president, senior Jet Semrick. “The goal of the JCCB is to provide food during the holidays for families that are living in poverty so that they can enjoy the holidays without worrying about when they will eat their next meal.”
