Senior Karl Walter is this year’s East Kansas district student of the year for speech and debate. This award is given to one graduating senior each year. The head speech and debate coaches of 15 area schools, including East, rank senior candidates based on their competitive success, strong character, integrity and devotion to both the community and speech and debate.
“I was honored to receive the award,” Walter said. “I think I’m the first person from East to receive it so that’s a really big deal. It’s definitely a big honor so I’m very happy.”
This June, the top 10 district students of the year will be interviewed at the National Speech and Debate tournament in Overland Park, and a national winner will be chosen.
