This year, seniors Emily Chisholm and Henry Sniezek were the two recipients of the Dr. Art Newcomer Scholarship. The honorary award is named after the previous Shawnee Mission East Athletic Director. Each year the award is presented to one boy and girl athlete who excels both in their sport as well as in the classroom.
On the athletic side, Chisholm is a three year Varsity soccer player and a two year Varsity tennis player. Academically, she maintained a 4.74 GPA. She is a Pep Club Executive, SHARE chair and a member of Chamber Choir and National Honors Society. Outside of school, she fills her schedule with volunteering on the Children’s Mercy Hospital Teen Advisory Board, KIDS KC advisory board and is a goalie on the FCKC soccer club.
“I’m very honored,” Chisholm said. “They put all of the names up in the gym every year, so it will be cool to have my name up there forever.”
Sniezek, the boy awarded the scholarship, is a Varsity diver for East. In addition to diving he also participates in DECA and Coalition. With Chisholm, he is also a SHARE Chair, Chamber choir and National Honors Society member while still upholding his 4.18 GPA.
“I’m very humbled and honored to be accepting this award,” Sniezek said. “I had watched the previous winners: Sam Huffman and Jamie McDonald, and I knew how great they were.”
The two have worked hard in both an academic setting as well as athletic, and their names on the gym wall will show that.
