After several occasions of flooding in the auditorium last year, the Shawnee Mission School District has decided to install a new staircase in the front of the school, which will reduce the flooding. The construction will occur on the south side of campus, where the previous walking path has also been redesigned to resolve the issue. The flooding occurred when water worked it’s way from the top of the parking lot down to the auditorium, causing the leakage.
The district plans to eliminate several other issues with the addition.
“We’re kinda killing a lot of birds with one stone,” Principal John McKinney said. “[We are] fixing the water issue, but also providing a gathering area and also correcting the walking path.”
Construction is expected to be completed by early September, according to McKinney.
