I scanned the glass case displaying a multitude of ice cream containers as I breathed in the sweet smell of cream and sugar in Clementine’s Ice Cream in the Shops of Prairie Village — the new location of the shop that was originally based in St. Louis, Missouri.

Unsure of what to order, I asked what the most popular flavors were and was quickly pointed in the direction of the salted caramel cookies and cream, gooey butter cake and Italian butter cookie ice creams. I ordered one scoop of each and excitedly walked towards the checkout counter.
Then the cashier told me the price of my purchase.
$8.80. Each.
There is no way the medium-sized cup of ice cream I purchased labeled “petite,” costs $8.80. It felt like a robbery. Sadly, I already filled my mouth with a bite of cold, creamy deliciousness, so I fork over what feels like my last paycheck, and hope the ice cream will comfort my financial woes.
Luckily for me, the sweet treat numbed my brain into forgetting about the price, and I began to focus on the taste of the ice cream.
The first flavor I tried was the salted caramel cookies and cream ice cream. The creamy and thick vanilla base with a touch of sweetness held chunks of Oreo cookies that added a chocolatey richness to the ice cream. The sweet cream and chocolate were perfectly balanced by the salty tang of caramel that interlaced every bite. This unusual combination of caramel and Oreos was by far my favorite, but not something I’m ready to pay for more than once a month..
The next flavor I tried was gooey butter cake. This flavor was built on the same creamy base with hints of warm buttercake and a salty tang mixed in.
The ice cream also featured the perfect ratio of actual buttercake pieces mixed into the gooey butter cake flavored base. These chunks were the best part, and I was delighted to hear that Clementine’s makes all of their own mix-ins. While this ice cream was one of my favorites, I felt that it was a bit too salty and could have used more richness, so not a flavor I would spend my money on.
The third and final flavor I tried was the Italian butter cookie. I don’t know how they made this ice cream, but everything about it tastes exactly like a traditional Biscoff cookie. It had a rich buttery flavor with a hint of salt and chunks of what appeared to be cookies. After finishing the scoop I found myself craving a cup of tea to go with the cookies.
Done with my ice cream, I found myself wishing I could come back with my friends, but dreading having to pay the outrageous prices for so little product.
So while I'm still obsessed with the revolutionary flavors, for the sake of my wallet, it's going to be a while before I visit again.
