SME Debate had four successful tournaments over the past weekend.
Nick Massa and Caroline Hassett traveled to Valley High School in Des Moines, Iowa and ended in the Octo-Finalists or the top 16 teams.
Many of the novice debaters competed closer to home at Shawnee Mission South. Sophomores Jack Mikkelson and Henry Leopold went 5-0 and took first place. Hannah Hoberts and Julia Stevermer took third place when they also went 5-0. Four other teams went 4-1 and two more when 3-2.
At the East Kansas Novice Kickoff Tournament here at SME, three teams went 4-0 and three went 3-1. Daniel Hill won the best ballot award.
“This year is going really well,” debate coach Trey Witt said. “Our varsity kids are really motivated and hardworking, as is the novice group that we have this year. We just hope to keep motivation high and continue to set goals and focus on improvement as the season continues.”
