Ten of East’s most elite debaters will be going to Iowa for a national circuit debate this weekend. This Iowa Causcus Tournament holds a debate each year for competitive high school debate teams. The students that will be competing this weekend are seniors Chase Derusseau, Jamie McDonald, Ada Throckmorton, Utsa Ramaswami, Karl Walter, and juniors Henry Walter, Parker Mitchell, Jack Werner, Ali Dastjerdi, Shrushti Mehta.
“I think they’ll do well,” debate teacher Trey Witt said. “It’s always unpredictable. It’s a really competitive tournament.”
Two of the teams have already been to a national circuit this year and have done well. In a previous tournament, Throckmorton and Ramaswami made it to semifinals and achieved a Tournament of Champions bid, which is a very competitive tournament that a team must qualify for. If they earn another bid this weekend, they will be able to go to the Tournament of Champions.
