Every second Thursday of October, the international agency for the prevention of blindness holds World Sight Day. East students were invited to participate in World Sight Day by wearing sunglasses around school to spread awareness for vision impairment and blindness.
Coalition and teacher David Muhammad used posters around the school that said #getshaddy to get the word out. Coalition members also encouraged students to wear glasses.
“I told my kids that they would get extra credit if they wear their sunglasses, so a couple of them are wearing them,” Muhammad said. “I have seen quite a few kids around the school with shades on also. Hopefully we can raise a little awareness.”
Muhammad first heard about World Sight Day when he went to the Toms headquarters after winning a trip in June.
“What Toms does now is that for every pair of sunglasses you buy from them, they donate a pair of prescription glasses or cataracts surgery to someone in need,” Muhammad said. “The problem is, if a kid can’t afford glasses, they can’t go to school.”
