Cookies are my kryptonite. I bake cookies at least once a week to “celebrate,” which makes me feel better about my excessive baking. I got an 85% on my chemistry empirical formula quiz? Chocolate chip it is. Kylie Jenner had her baby? Oatmeal raisin seems like a good idea. So when a friend mentioned The Classic Cookie and Cafe located on Gregory Blvd., I just had to go.
As I walked in my eyes were drawn immediately to the pale blue wall painted with the Cookie Monster quote: “Today I will live in the moment unless it is unpleasant in which case I will eat a cookie,” which is something I already live by. I took a seat and scanned the menu choices ranging from breakfast, lunch, and of course, cookies.
In addition to the quote, two large tables and a couple smaller ones filled the cramped space. The quaintness of the cafe combined with the regulars who picked up their usual order of peanut butter cookie gave the cafe a small town vibe.
One of the drawbacks was the compact setting with limited seating. My mom and I were seated at the end of a long dinner table meant for ten people, not two. The table’s width, combined with the close proximity to our eating neighbors, meant I could barely hear my mom tell me updates about the Olympic ice dancing competitions.
However, the food made up for having to shout over the table abyss. Because the word “cookie” was in the name of the cafe, I simply had to try one of their chocolate chip cookies. The center was oozing creamy chocolate chips while the edge offered a crisp crunch. Perfect.
Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day so I opted for a meal from their breakfast menu. My sausage, cheese, and tomato omelet was a balanced blend of zesty sausage, sweet tomatoes and softened cheese. The tomatoes offered a sweeter side to the spicy tang of the sausage. Paired with crunchy sourdough toast and and an assortment of fruit, it sure beat my usual breakfast of Raisin Bran Crunch cereal. A bite of my mom’s crunchy pecan filled pancakes had me wishing I had gotten those as well.
The banana and nutella belgian waffle, breakfast burrito and breakfast BLT were other options that I’ll definitely be ordering next time. And if I go back for lunch, the grilled cheese and fresh spinach salad are a must.
The Classic Cookie was kind to my babysitting salary with my omelet and cookie only costing $8. The charming atmosphere and delicious breakfast made up for the need of a megaphone to talk across the enormous table. Next time I want to “celebrate” a good score on my English vocab test, I’ll stop by the Classic Cookie and Cafe.
