The East Class of 1963 will be holding their 50th reunion this weekend from Friday, Oct. 11 to Saturday, Oct. 12. The class has planned a variety of activities to reconnect. On Friday, the classmates have the option of either going to the East game against Lawrence Free State High School. The other option is for classmates to go a casual “meet and greet”, an opportunity for classmates to reconnect, meet spouses and chat with each other. On Saturday morning, the class will be touring the school and will end the night with a banquet at Homestead Country Club.
The class has had five other reunions (10th, 20th, 30th, 35th, and 40th) before this one, but this reunion will be the first time there’s been an organized meet and greet. Some members of the class also participated in the Lancer Day parade in a “Class of 1963” float.
Of the 622 people who graduated in 1963, 185 students are coming back for the reunion. Graduate and organizer Becky Lagoski believes that it is a great amount of students coming for it being 50 years later. A classmate is even flying in from France to come to the reunion. Lagoski tried to contact all the classmates to create a biography book that would be distributed at the reunion with updated information of all the classmates. Lagoski even tried to contact a foreign exchange student who went to East at the time who was from Turkey, but unfortunately she did not respond.
When there are no reunions, the class stays in contact through a Facebook group and the online program, Class Report.
“[It’s a good amount of people coming], especially for 50 years down the road,” Lagoski said.
