Travis and Tay: Yay or Nay: Staffer believes Chiefs player Travis Kelce and singer Taylor Swift are the best new couple

I immediately went into denial when I got a Snapchat from one of my friends showing Taylor Swift chest-bumping someone in Chiefs football player Travis Kelce’s suite after he had scored a touchdown against the Chicago Bears.

I raced downstairs to my living room TV to see what my friend was talking about, and there she was — Taylor, celebrating with the Kelce family. The hugs shared between Taylor and Donna Kelce, Travis’ mom, and the many high-fives in the suite, instantly hypnotized me.

Since their first public appearance in Kansas City at Arrowhead Stadium, Swift and Kelce are the hottest new celebrity couple this year.

After the game, the couple rode away in Travis’ snazzy 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle Convertible to have dinner at Prime Social, a restaurant on the Plaza — personally the most romantic thing I’ve ever heard. Travis rented out the entire restaurant for the two along with the whole Chiefs team just so Taylor wouldn’t get bombarded by her fans, which is just adorable.

My all-time favorite football player and my most listened-to music artist — two celebrities from entirely different worlds. An A-list pop star with 12 number-one pop albums and an all-star athlete with two Super Bowl wins seem like they shouldn’t belong together solely because their publicity is through the roof. In no realm would I ever imagined they would meet, especially not in my hometown. 

Nonetheless, this athlete-popstar power couple is breaking the internet more than anyone could’ve imagined — and I’m here for it. 

Just the fact that Taylor named her fourth album “Red” — the color of the Chiefs — is enough to confirm that they’re a perfect match in my mind.  

The couple’s love story was sparked this summer when Travis attended the Eras Tour in Kansas City. He attempted to give Taylor his phone number on a friendship bracelet he made, which alone sounds like something that comes straight out of a romance movie.

It wasn’t until September 2023 when the rumors of this alleged couple were confirmed and Taylor was spotted at Arrowhead Stadium watching the Chiefs game in the Kelce family suite — the same suite Travis watched Taylor perform at the Eras tour. 

I’m not going to lie and say I was always team Travis and Taylor — I didn’t believe the news at first. A few months before Taylor’s grand appearance in the Kelce Suite, my dad sent me a Tweet about the rumored couple. I responded and told him it was undoubtedly fake news. Taylor had just broken up with her boyfriend of six years Joe Alywn, and honestly, I didn’t think Travis and Taylor would last if the rumors proved to be true.

It was when I saw Taylor giving her genuine smile through my TV screen and Travis persistently looking up at her, showing her off to his teammates and coaches when a switch was flicked and I knew they were perfect for each other.

It was the fact that Taylor herself had chosen to be in my hometown, only a 26-minute drive from right where I was, that had me thrilled. And I’m sure this isn’t the last time Taylor will make an appearance at Arrowhead Stadium.

And come on, she literally wrote a song called “Cornelia Street” back in 2019 with the lyrics, “as if the street lights pointed in an arrowhead leading us home.” I mean how perfect is that — she practically predicted this four years before she even met Travis. 

I checked social media and without a doubt, my feed was spammed with stories, reactions and even fan edits about this couple.  With each post my mind was changed — this couple is a power move. 

Within less than a day I was seeing T-shirts saying “Loving him was red,” complete with a Kelce jersey and theories explaining how perfect this duo is, and I’m here for it.

Inevitably, there are suspicions that this whole ordeal with Taylor and Travis is just a publicity stunt and that the two aren’t a real couple, but I disagree. No A-list celebrity or two-time Superbowl winner is going to pull off a stunt to reach more publicity. Especially not when Travis has just started his football season, and Taylor is in the middle of her monumental Eras Tour. 

The insane amount of fame both Taylor and Travis have made this relationship skyrocket in the media. It quickly became much bigger than just two people dating. Travis and his brother Jason Kelce mentioned the relationship on their podcast “New Heights” answering Swiftie’s questions about the rules of football. The official NFL TikTok account changed their bio to “Taylor Swift was here.”

In the end, this duo is just two people who have one of the cutest stories starting from the very beginning when they first met to now seeing Taylor cheer on Travis on the football field. These two are truly “endgame”.
