The Senate voted to end the government shutdown stalemate last night, allowing for the government to reopen as soon as this week if both the Senate and the House of Representatives pass a continuing resolution.
The 60-40 vote to take the first step toward ending the shutdown happened after eight Senate Democrats agreed to support a continuing resolution package that would fund multiple agencies and programs for the full fiscal year, and all others until Jan. 30, 2026, according to Politico.
The official Senate vote on the resolution could happen anytime from in a few hours to a couple of days, according to U.S. government teacher Jacob Penner, depending on how long other Senate Democrats carry out debates on the package.
In exchange for agreeing to the package, a Senate floor vote in December on legislation to extend expiring Affordable Care Act tax credits was promised to Democrats. The credits, which help lower-income Americans afford health insurance and will expire at the end of the year, have been a key priority for Democrats in the funding battle.
The agreement also requires the Trump administration to rehire some of the federal workers fired at the beginning of the shutdown, according to The Government Executive, and ensures the workers receive back pay.
Senior Ishaan Home believes that Democrats and Republicans should’ve cooperated from the very beginning. But he still supports the reasoning behind the shutdown; he thinks the Democrats shouldn’t have caved so soon and should’ve been more strategic with their demands.
“In the future, Democrats, if they want to appeal to the people who have voted for them before, they need to have different demands and ideals when it comes to things like the shutdown,” Home said. “I don't think caving as easily as they did is probably the best idea.”
However, because the continuing resolution bill only ensures funding until Jan. 30, another shutdown could occur afterwards if Congress cannot agree on a proper funding bill.
“There is a very real threat that we'll be in the exact same position in January,” Penner said.
