SM East has won the annual Coaches vs. Cancer Chick-fil-A Challenge today. The challenge is a competition between Rockhurst High School and SM East to raise money for CURE Ocular Melanoma.
The schools collectively raised money in honor of Lindsay Zuebeck, the mom of sophomore basketball player Canon Zuebeck.
Chick-fil-A, located on Ward Parkway, hosts this competition, and during the week leading up to the rivalry basketball game between the two schools, the Chick-fil-A employees tally the amount of money spent by each school’s students.
“It's great because pretty much anytime you're at the Chick-fil-A location on State Line, you run into someone from one of the two schools,” Pep Club Executive and senior Luke Taylor said.
The competition ended at 4 p.m today, and the winner was announced after the third quarter of the Varsity basketball game. Twenty percent of the money spent at Chick-fil-A from both schools will go to CURE Ocular Melanoma in East’s name.
Ocular Melanoma is a type of cancer that affects the eyes. CURE OM focuses on education and research. While giving support and access to information for those affected.
This tradition has remained strong over the years due to Ward Parkway Chick-fil-A operator Forrest Swyden and Athletic Director Ryan Johnshon.
“It’s super fun to have this competition because it creates another factor of rivalry between the schools,“ Taylor said. “It pushes people to get out for a social challenge.”
