Nearly 113 million people voted in the 2018 midterm election on Nov. 6, reaching a record voter turnout. Midterm elections are elections held midway through the current president’s term in office.
Congressional elections occur every two years, and representatives serve two-year terms. Only one third of the members of the Senate run for office in any given election as they serve six-year terms.
49 percent of eligible voters voted in the 2018 midterms, which is more than 10 percent higher than the 37 percent voter turnout of the 2014 midterm election.
Nationally, Republicans kept their majority in the Senate, but Democrats gained control of the House of Representatives.
