On August 29th, Shawnee Mission East teacher David Muhammad released a new single called “Fallen” feat. Harper Mundy, Charlie Jensen, Andrew Telthorst, Davis Vaughn and Conductor Williams. “Fallen” is about sexual assault and was written over the summer after Muhammad sat down with some students and Kansas City University Radio.
“I felt like sexual assault is something men don’t discuss,” said Muhammad. “A man speaking to a man is so much more powerful when it comes to this.”
Following the sexual assault of a freshman girl in the boy’s bathroom last year at East, Muhammad wanted a way to spread awareness about the relevance of sexual assault. He reached out to students he had previously worked with and trusted to collaborate on this song.
“Getting to be able to play the part of a victim in this song was really impactful,” Senior Harper Mundy said. “ I think about how this song can give a voice to the voiceless.”
This will be the fifth single Muhammad has released. His previous albums were titled, “The Hanging Trees” and “Construction Paper” which also feature students.
