East Alum Grant Wahl died early Saturday in Qatar, according to the Associated Press. He collapsed while covering the World Cup match between Argentina and the Netherlands. Wahl graduated from East in 1992 and was on The Hauberk staff during his time at East
This was Wahl’s eighth time reporting on the World Cup. He had previously written for Sports Illustrated, Fox Sports and CBS Sports.
United States Soccer issued a statement on Twitter, writing that “Grant made soccer his life’s work, and we are devastated that he and his brilliant writing will no longer be with us.”
