Breaking News: Debate State Championships Results

SM East debate competed at the KSHSAA 6A Two‑Speaker State Championship from Thursday to Saturday at the University of Kansas, with senior Ishaan Home and junior Gray Snyder placing second.

Each SM East team, consisting of two debaters, debated six preliminary rounds before competing in the first elimination round of the tournament, in which 32 out of the 66 total teams progressed to. Two of the SM East teams made it past the double octofinals round, and then one of them to finals. 

Home and Snyder advanced the furthest and competed in the finals against Blue Valley North’s Nikolas Lipscomb and Shruti Parthasarathy. After placing second in the state, Home and Snyder finished with a record of 7-3.

“Doing debate gives you the idea that you have to trust your partner that they will carry you through this,” Home said. “Finals was a little stressful because we knew there was a lot on the line but over the year I believe our ability to coordinate has gotten a lot better, so we knew we could trust each other.”
