On the second day of papal conclave — a private meeting with all Cardinals to elect a new Pope — the 135 elected a new pope following Pope Francis’s passing on April 21.
The new pope is Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, now known as Pope Leo XIV. He’s the first American pope and is from Chicago, Illinois.
Leo’s 69 years old and spent his career ministering in Peru. He’s considered more centrist by Vatican experts and is seen as calm, balanced and an exceptional leader, according to Forbes.
Pope Francis brought Leo to the Vatican in 2023 to serve as the head of the office that vets bishop nominations — one of the most important jobs in the catholic church. Leo was also close to Francis during his time as Pope. This gave him prominence going into the conclave.
His choice of papal name also reflects what he plans to bring to the church. Many Popes are drawn to names of previous popes they’d like to emulate — such as Pope Leo XIV. Previous Pope Leos have been reformers, emphasizing human dignity and the dignity of labor. Leo also connects him to a legacy of strong, influential figures in the church and serving during a time of chaos.
Sophomore Miles McCune watched the livestream where they revealed the new pope in his fourth hour Physical Science class.
“It’s really exciting because he’s the first ever American Pope,” McCune said. “Emotions are high.”
