Associate Principal Britt Haney is transferring to SM Northwest for the 2021-22 school year and East Instructional Coach Kristoffer Barikmo will take his place — a decision the Board of Education will finalize with a vote tonight.
Last week, the position opened up as Northwest’s current associate principal announced his departure and Haney gave the district his name. He viewed the switch as a chance to spend more time with his family.
“I drive 17 stoplights to get to work every day, now it will be four,” Haney said. “Double that up when I come back for night duties. So this is going to be an abundant amount more time with my family — I got a seventh grader and a ninth grader, and I wanna be at more of their things as well.”
Before his eight years as East’s Associate Principal, Haney taught math and band for 13 years at Northwest and looks forward to reconnecting with the Northwest community. Barikmo is also excited to work alongside Principal-hire Jason Peres, who he worked with as a history teacher in the Blue Valley District.
When an Associate Principal position opened up in the district, Barikmo applied. Despite the position not having a specific school assigned to it yet, this allowed the district to decide where he was best able to serve. Upon learning he’ll be staying at East, Barikmo is grateful for the opportunity to continue serving the East community.
“I think what’s most exciting for me is I get to learn another part of how our school operates and be involved a whole lot more with student activities, athletics,” Barikmo said. “My job as an instructional coach was really just working with teachers, and so its a nice opportunity for me to step into a much more participation role with student activities, leadership and really continuing the tradition that East has.”
Barikmo anticipates the district will send out an application notice in the coming week to look for someone to fill his current role.
