At noon, a false Code Red Lockdown was allegedly triggered by a substitute teacher in team games, mistakenly calling for a Code Red instead of a first-responder lockdown protocol, according to SM East students.
The substitute was attempting to get first aid for a junior who was reportedly hit in the head with a softball and knocked unconscious during the team games class, and accidentally triggered the Code Red protocol instead.
Red lights began to flash in every classroom, and an automated voice warned faculty and students of the Code Red.
“Lock the classroom door. Code Red: turn out the lights, stay away from sight. Maintain silence. Code Red,” the automated voice said.
The Code Red alarm is specifically used for an active shooter or other threat on campus or inside a building, according to the SMSD Safety and Security protocols, making this incident a false alarm.
According to junior Mak Terril, students reportedly hid from the “threat” in their classrooms, messaging parents and loved ones in distress and fear.
“I messaged my parents, and I think the girls next to me also messaged their parents,” Terril said. “I was nervous, I thought [a shooting] was actually going on.”
The lockdown took place six minutes into the AP Government and Politics exam, interrupting the timed test.
