Boys Varsity Soccer Recap: Quick recap on the first game of the 2021 season against SMW

The Varsity Boys Soccer Team started the season with a 3-3 tie against SM West on August 28th and a bleacher-packed student section — a different energy from last season’s minimal COVID attendance.

East let in two early goals for West, but the team wasn’t discouraged. Around 20 minutes in, junior Jack Lucas scored a volley, sending the ball into the back of the net, getting the boys back into the game.

With 15 minutes left in the half, junior and team captain Miles Crosser was fouled by a West player in the box and given a penalty kick. Crosser easily put it in goal and tied it back up 2-2.

Following his goal, Crosser ran to the crowd of students jumping up and down in support.

“It was honestly one of the best moments of my life,” Crosser said. “It was so surreal.”

With 20 seconds left, sophomore Conor Neusel took a shot which was deflected off a West player’s foot, into the net, putting East up 3-2 at half time.

Less than 10 minutes into the second half, West scored a goal, once again tying it up 3-3. East was dominating with possession and ball movement, but struggling to find the back of the net.

Around 20 minutes into the second half, players from both East and West began cramping and dropping to the turf. The trainers were ready to help as the boys grew tired.

The tie sent the game into overtime twice, but neither team scored in the 10-minute halves, ending the team’s first game in a tie.
