Boys’ Swimming: JV League Recap

By

The East boy’s JV swim and dive meet at Shawnee Mission West contained dropped times for East and fierce competition between league-wide swimmers. The meet occurred Tuesday and was the final meet of the season for the JV team.

The races, for East, included the 200 Yard Medley Relay, 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Freestyle, 500 Yard Freestyle, 200 Yard Freestyle Relay, 100 Yard Backstroke and 100 Yard Breaststroke. Many East swimmers won their heats and even more of them placed in those races. Senior Brock Arveson, Sophomore Denny Rice, Sophomore Ben Shackleford and Senior Isaac Berlau came in first place in the 200 Medley Relay as well.

Coach Wiley Wright, the longest running head coach of swim in East history, put in his input over this one and the entire season.

“The kids are doing really well and dropping time, by working really hard in practice. They also won the medal in the relay which is very good,” Wright said. “You always want to finish the year really well and the JV kids did.”

The swimmers themselves had a great atmosphere to compete in, because of the packed bleachers of parents and guests. The pool building was overflowing.

Senior Isaac Berlau competed well in the 50 yard freestyle and in the medley relay.

“I think we did pretty well, we swam fast and won in the relay,” Berlau said. “I also did well in the freestyle and there were a lot of kids there.”

As this was the last JV meet of the season, the seniors were swimming their last stroke.

“I’m going to really miss it, although it will be great to have some free time after school,” Berlau said.”I am swimming D3 in college next year so I’ll be back at it soon enough.”
