Boys Basketball Updates: Boys basketball prepares for their upcoming game against Rockhurst High School

Current Placements

  • Sunflower League Record: 6-5
  • Sunflower League Standing: 7 out of 13 teams

Top Performer

Senior Stephen Hlobik has set the tone for his consistency in scoring and rebounds in the past few games. “He's kind of our go-to guy, settles us down, gets us into what we need to if we need a bucket,” assistant varsity coach Kevin Wiesner said. “He's the guy we go to most of the time.”

Hlobik’s recent game statistics:

  • SM Northwest - 21 point and 7 rebounds
  • Olathe South - 14 points and 8 rebounds
  • SM North - 20 points and 6 rebounds

Upcoming Competitions

The team is travelling to Topeka to play three games. They are leaving from SM East on Thursday, Jan. 22 and will play on Jan. 22-24 at Topeka Highland Park High School. The SM East vs. Rockhurst game is approaching on Jan. 30. However, the team isn’t only focused on this game and is rather focused on the games in front of them first.

Strengths

“The strength of our team is [that] we got guys that want to win,” Wiesner said. “We’ve got competitors. We’ve got guys that fight. [It] doesn't matter the team we're going against, or anything like that, it's kids that just want to win.”

Weaknesses

However, weaknesses for the team include their ability to get the ball into the net. They aren’t shooting the ball as often as they should, and open shots aren’t being hit according to Wiesner. For preparation for playoffs, practices continue to focus on specific parts of their game that needed improvement from the previous games. Such as working on finishing their shots, or moving the ball down the court.

Injuries

A notable injury is senior Vince Kopp. Kopp is recovering from a rolled ankle from the most recent game versus SM Northwest. He will be out for the next week, and will return to play as soon as he is recovered.

Lineup Changes

The starting lineup has been altered in the past due to illness, but as of now there are no changes to be made. “For us, we don't really care who starts as much as who finishes the game,” Wiesner said.

Other

Head varsity coach Shawn Hair got his 500th win of his career. The team celebrated the accomplishment with a cake at the boys’ practice.
