For the second time Shawnee Mission East is having a Scholastic Book Fair. It will be open from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. through next Tuesday. New librarian, Kathleen Knop, has brought the Book Fair back to East because she thinks the library could benefit from it financially, and it would help spark reading interest in students.
The book fair has a wide variety of books for many different kinds of readers. Books, posters and much more will be available to purchase. The Book Fair will also be selling hot chocolate and cappuccinos for 50 cents.
The SM East Book Fair helps to provide students with books that they will enjoy, but it also helps to finance new books for the school’s library. After costs are subtracted from the provided supplies, Scholastic gives East’s library the remainder of the profit.
Although the financial aspect of the Book Fair is important, there are other important reasons for having the Book Fair, Knop, says.
“It’s also to get kids into the library that may not come in [very often].”
Parent volunteers and student helpers set up and run the Book Fair. Knop is in charge of all the scheduling that takes place in order to get the Book Fair at East as well organizing volunteers for the event.
