Before writing this blog, I cycled through about 20 blog ideas including (but not limited to):
“Struggles with Individuality”
“My Music Taste is Weird”
“John Green, You’re My Hero”
“Why I Hate Monograms”
“Addicted to Pinterest”
In the end, I decided not to do a shoddy job writing a blog that I’m not sure about. I just decided to write about my main problem here: writer’s block.
For the past two weeks I’ve been suffering major writer’s block. Every time I sit down at my laptop and try to transfer my thoughts into text, I come up with nothing but pointless paragraphs about “Being a Foodie” and “Why I’m Destined to Marry Joseph Gordon-Levitt.” As my hero John Green once wrote, “My thoughts are stars I cannot fathom into constellations.” In my case, that couldn’t be more true.
I’ve looked for inspiration everywhere, from my bookshelf to under my yoga mat. And I’ve got nothing.
Like most writers, not knowing what to write about is extremely familiar territory. I’m definitely not the first person to sit down and stare at a blank screen, fingers poised on the home-row. Lately when I sit and down and expect to write hundreds of words at a time, I only end up with that blank screen staring back at me.
Even right now, my writer’s block is an issue. As I’m writing this sentence I’m struggling to come up with an idea of what to write next, or how to even end this blog. So I guess I’ll end it with some advice.
Anytime you’re stuck with writer’s block, go do something else. Put down the computer, put down your pen. Go outside and walk around for a while. If it’s too cold, stay inside and watch a movie. Listen to new music. Just get away from your writing. And when you come back to it, who knows. You might be inspired.
Unless you’re like me. In that case, you’re probably hopeless, and you should continue to stare at your laptop until you can organize your thoughts. That works, too.
