I wasn’t always a YouTube junkie. I started out just watching music videos every so often in middle school – I can even remember the first one I ever watched – “Chelsea” by Stefy. But soon, I decided that I wanted to comment on videos, so I forced myself to make an account. I began subscribing to channels and then began making my own videos. Now, I feel like I YouTube has connected me to people all over the world. From larger YouTubers in Britain like “Charlieissocoollike”, to makeup gurus in China, to vloggers on Venice Beach like “Kassemg”, I feel more connected with the world around me, just by watching videos on my computer.
I even remember the days before ads plagued every video on YouTube and it was solely a creative outlet for equally creative individuals. But strangely, I don’t miss those times. Because with new things, however inconvenient, comes some pretty amazing stuff.
I’ve watched YouTube videos for years now at no cost to me. I feel like after that much time, I owe some of these people something for all of the hours of entertainment they have given me. Channels can now get money from AdSense and can actually gain something back from all their hard work. They can then turn around and put that money back into their work and make better-quality videos.
At the same time, there are those that say originality on the site has decreased and that people who used to make amazing videos have sold out and no longer make videos because they like making videos, but because they are raking in the dough. I disagree. There is always room for originality; it just takes a well-trained YouTube fan to search it out. While there are some people who may have “sold out”, I tend to think that they are just trying to make a living, while doing something they love. You can’t be amazing all the time. That is, unless you’re Crabstickz, a young Brit who has an uncanny ability to do hilarious impersonations (check him out).
I am subscribed to 270 channels and I adore opening up my Sub Box every day and being flooded with interesting videos. With just a few clicks of my mouse, I can gain access to vlogs, skits, movie trailers, music videos, tutorials, and more. A new world is open to me, and the best part about it? It’s free.
