ABC Family is the king of holiday countdowns. First of all, 13 Nights of Halloween is the best thing since “Boy Meets World” marathons. Solid gold horror oldies like “Hocus Pocus,” Halloween themed TV episodes and those crappy made-for-TV movies all combine to create an extremely entertaining 13 nights. And nothing compares to the mac-daddy of countdowns: 25 Days of Christmas. Of course, I have my favorites. I love the classic clay-mation films, “Rudolph,” and all his spin-offs. Not to mention the awesome more modern films like “Elf.” Now, there’s a movie that I could watch 20 times and still laugh so hard eggnog comes out of my nose.
But as 13 Nights came to a close, ABC Family was already advertising for the countdown to the countdown of 25 Days of Christmas.
A countdown to a countdown. Really?!
And what happened to Thanksgiving? There is a holiday between Halloween and the winter season, you know. And a great holiday, at that. Pumpkin pies, family dinner, celebrating the merciless slaughter of thousands of turkeys: classic.
ABC Family is completely ignoring one of my personal favorite holidays. I understand that there aren’t that many Thanksgiving themed movies, but at least give the holiday a shout out. A break from the countdowns would allow me to bask in the warmth of Thanksgiving before being buried in the snow that is 25 Days of Christmas.
ABC Family, get it together. Give Thanksgiving some time to itself. Have some respect for the Macy’s Day Parade and the innumerable turkey deaths. I enjoy themes and holidays as much as the next person, but even I need a break between countdowns.
