Basketball Season Put to a Pause: The sophomore, JV, and Varsity team all had to quarantine at beginning of season due to COVID-19 cases

The boys’ basketball season began on Nov. 19, but the Sophomore, JV and Varsity teams had to be quarantined after their managers got COVID-19.

Sophomore team manager and sophomore Miles Crosser tested positive less than two weeks into the season on Nov. 30, causing the team’s season to be put on hold. Soon after, on Dec. 3., JV and Varsity manager and junior Gus Bergkamp also tested positive, putting his teams in quarantine as well.

Crosser doesn’t know where he got the virus and wishes that it didn’t have to put the whole season on pause.

“I felt really bad I was the reason the whole team had to stop practicing,” Crosser said. “I tore my ACL in my soccer season so I know the feeling of not getting to play your favorite sport and I really wanted to give them that experience.”

The sophomore team has been out of quarantine since Dec. 10, but have still had to find ways to continue practicing for their first game taking place today. Sophomore point guard Graham Mosher shot hoops in his driveway during his quarantine, hoping to gain back a little of the practice he was missing out on with the team.

“Once we had our first practice [after quarantining] everyone was a little rusty,” Mosher said. “I think we have a really good dynamic though and we will be able to pull through for our first game.”

There was a similar situation with JV and Varsity, and their practices weren’t allowed to take place until Dec. 12.

Varsity player and sophomore Spencer Blacketer practiced at his gym that his summer basketball club uses to make sure he stayed on top of his skills and determination.

“Even though we missed the beginning of the season, we are just fortunate to be able to play a full season and to be able to practice with each other,” Blacketer said. “We view this as just a minor speed bump and we will keep our heads up for the rest of the season.”

With three of the four boys’ basketball teams having to quarantine, their season was put to a 14-day pause, but just like with everything else this year, the boys will continue to practice and play hard to win their games.
