Freshman and Varsity golfer Ella Slicker is currently heading into the Kansas State Championship with a 6-6 first place champion streak, as well as claiming the 2022 Sunflower League Championship. Slicker has accomplished all this while only being a first-year high school student athlete.
How long have you been playing golf and what made you decide to get into it?
“I’ve been playing golf since I was probably seven. My dad definitely got me into it because he’s obsessed with golf.”
What was your reaction when you found out you made the varsity golf team?
“I was really excited and all the girls that were on Varsity are super nice so I was really happy to be able to play with them.”
How many hours a week do you practice golf?
“Besides our tournaments, usually every day. I usually practice for an hour and a half.”
What does a typical golf practice look like for you?
“If I’m practicing by myself, I would go to the range for 15 minutes and then hit each one of my clubs. Then I go to the putting green and either putt or chip for an hour to an hour and 15 minutes.”
How have your previous golf tournaments shown your hard work paying off so far this season?
“Just like how much I practice, I feel like when I get in tough situations in tournaments I’m able to get out of them easier.”
How has being an underclassmen on the golf team impacted your relationship with your teammates?
“I feel like since I’m a freshman and I’m new to East, they are helpful with [the] high school [aspect] and everything.”
What are your biggest strengths and challenges when it comes to golf?
“My strengths are my mindset and my attitude. My weaknesses are definitely chipping.”
What are your goals for the rest of this year’s golf season?
“I really want to get top three at state this year.”
