Astroworld – the concert I had been looking forward to since I hit the ‘confirm order’ on Tickets For Less in December – has finally arrived.
I purchased my tickets the day Travis Scott announced he would be extending his tour and thought about it everyday until Feb. 17 finally came. I spent months memorizing his songs, cramming my brain with rap lyrics and I picked my outfit a month in advance.
For weeks I stalked Travis’s Instagram watching videos from his previous concerts. The crowds looked absolutely wild with die hard fans and the set sounded incredible. I imagined what the Sprint Center would look like decked with huge lights and smoke machines, and what the energy in the room would be like when he played my favorite songs like “CAN’T SAY” and “NO BYSTANDERS.”
Sheck Wes opened for Travis, and although I only knew “Mo Bamba”, his biggest hit, I still spent the entire set dancing and screaming whatever lyrics I could figure out on the fly. Once he played “Mo Bamba,” the arena exploded with everyone screaming the lyrics in unison, and the real excitement set in for the night ahead.
Once Sheck Wes left the stage, there was about an hour before Travis came out, which was a bit annoying, but I knew it would be worth the wait. But when the lights went out, the crowd erupted. Travis was about to perform. Immediately I was on my feet, close to tears with happiness that my much anticipated concert was finally starting.
The bass in every song shook the floor, and I could feel it vibrating through my chest. The colored lights flashed across the room, smoke exploded from the stage in loud bursts and the big screen panned through the crowd, focusing mainly on the craziest fans in the building. Having so many people around my seats that were just as big of fans of Travis as I was was an amazing feeling and only added to my happiness throughout the concert.
I’ve been to 12 concerts, and at most of them, I’ve left the arena with a dead phone from taking videos of every second. At Astroworld, I left with 60 percent of my battery left because I didn’t want to risk missing something exciting when I was getting my phone out. I found myself wanting to enjoy every moment, whether it was the fireworks exploding from the ceiling or the Astroworld-branded money that showered the crowd from the confetti machine.
The rollercoaster that was mounted to the ceiling was my personal favorite part of the night. It stretched over the pit and connected the two stages that were on opposite sides of the arena. Travis was strapped in as he sang, with one lucky fan to his right. I’ve never been to a concert with so many different elements, keeping me guessing about what was next.
My only complaint was that it wasn’t long enough. Travis was only out for an hour and 20 minutes, which went by in what felt like five minutes. I wanted to hear every song from every album, and once it ended, I sat in my seat, ears ringing, taking in the once-in-a-lifetime concert I had just witnessed.
In the days following, I’ve spent my time watching videos my friends shared with each other from the concert. I laid in bed trying to get the feeling of euphoria I had experienced at the concert. Without the thousands of thrilled fans music bumping, it was almost impossible to achieve. Astroworld did not disappoint me, and if I ever got the opportunity, I would easily go again.
