Math teacher Andy Walter was selected as Shawnee Mission East’s National Honor Society Teacher of the Year on Thursday at the spring pep assembly.
National Honor Society students voted for three teachers who they felt made a significant contribution to their time at East.
“He’s a teacher that actually cares about his students and their success,” junior Grace Kenney said. “He appreciates hearing different people’s opinions and actually cares about the student – not just if they pass or fail.”
Winners receive a plaque commemorating their achievements. Past winners include Steven Appier and Amy Andersen.
“[East] is such a good school with so many good teachers who deserve it,” Walter said. “I feel like I share [the award] with all the other teachers.”
