In honor of the Kansas City Chiefs winning the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers, Chiefs’ defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi paid the adoption fees for all adoptable dogs at KC Pet Project — a local, no-kill, non-profit animal shelter dedicated to placing homeless pets into suitable homes.
Throughout the season, Nnadi supported KC Pet Project by sponsoring one dog for adoption every time the Chiefs won a game. By sponsoring a dog, Nnadi paid the adoption fees for the pet, letting any suitable person who chose to adopt one of the dogs do it free of charge. After winning the Super Bowl, he decided to end the season by paying the fees for all adoptable dogs.
KC Pet Project announced via Facebook that over 100 dogs will be able to find homes after having the adoption fees, typically ranging from $75 to $300 each, paid for every adoptable dog at all locations.
“We are so excited to announce that the Kansas City Chiefs’ defensive tackle Derrick Nnadi is choosing to celebrate the Super Bowl win by paying for the adoptions of all the adoptable dogs currently at KC Pet Project!” KC Pet Project wrote. “We have had an amazing, season-long, partnership with Derrick and he couldn’t have thought of a better ending.”
With an average of 20 new dogs coming into their shelters every day, according to CBS News, KC Pet Project is excited to be able to find more dogs new fitting homes after the Chiefs’ Super Bowl win.
The local shelter has seen many East student volunteers, including previous SHARE project chair senior Shelby Winter, who selected the non-profit sophomore year as her SHARE project.
“I realized that East didn’t really have any animal-related SHARE projects,” Winter said. “So I decided to reach out and fix that.”
While it is no longer allowed to be a SHARE project due to required volunteer training, Winter loved volunteering at the organization each Sunday for three hours. While she was happy to clean up the kennels and floors of KC Pet Project, Winter’s favorite part of volunteering was the last 30 minutes where they’d get to play with the animals — especially the kittens.
With her close tie to the organization, Winter was thrilled to hear Nnadi had paid the adoption fees of the dogs at the shelter.
“It’s really amazing that [Nnadi]’s doing that, especially since KC Pet Project is the largest no-kill animal shelter in the area,” Winter said.
