When I’m not feeling so good, there’s nothing better than some of my favorite things to cheer me up. Unfortunately, schnitzel with noodles will not appear on the list below.
1. Macaroni and cheese: As it is absolutely my favorite food, I have had quite a lot of experience with mac & cheese. I consume it at least once a week and can rank my top ten places in Kansas City to get this cheesy concoction. I truly feel that no matter who you are, there is a style of Mac & Cheese out there for you.
2. My bathrobe: Fun fact, I’m always cold. I haven’t worn a short sleeved shirt since the beginning of August. So, what could possibly be better than a large, comfy, lavender bathrobe? The answer is nothing. I usually put it on at home in the evenings over my clothes and sometimes I even wear it to bed. As my dad says, turning the heat up a degree can cost a bundle, but putting on an extra layer doesn’t cost anything!
3. The word “espionage”: Try saying it a few times and you’ll understand why I like it so much. It just rolls off of the tongue so nicely! Also, I’ve secretly always wanted to be a spy, though I think I’d be a bit more Johnny English than James Bond.
4. Basshunter: Most have heard of this Swedish techno/pop artist, but few take comfort in his music like I do. I love music with a hard beat and Basshunter surely provides that. I also like how quirky some of his songs are. One of his most popular songs, Dota, is solely about playing a gaming system for hours on end and in another called “Love You More” he sings about being able to “make the seas turn purple”. I’m not exactly sure what that means, but I know I like it.
5. Baby meerkats: I personally believe that meerkats cutest, most adorable animals alive. I once asked my teacher to put up a picture of a baby meerkat on the board during a quiz and I got an A. Ever since then, the meerkat has sort of been my trademark.
6. My license plate: My new customized plate says “Weasley” and I enjoy being able to proclaim my love for Harry Potter loud and clear for anyone that is driving behind me to notice. I also like that it is orange, which, of course, coincides with the family’s ginger hair color. If you see me driving wildly about, feel free to honk your horn to the tune of “Weasley is Our King” at me. Or maybe don’t. I have a feeling that would be quite distracting.
7. Social networking: I can understand why some people wouldn’t enjoy using sites such as Twitter, Formspring.me, LinkedIn, etc. Some people don’t like to connect publicly as much as others and some simply don’t have the time to do so. Others mistakenly believe they have nothing to share. But let me just tell you, whether it be how delicious the grilled cheese they had for lunch was, how much they disliked the movie they just saw or how angry they are at their mom, EVERYONE has something to say – some just don’t like to share it publicly. I clearly don’t fall into that category.
It’s probably weird that I love my bathrobe so much, or that I eat Mac & Cheese so often, or that I really enjoy looking at pictures of baby meerkats, but it’s true, so I’m admitting it all. I know that I’m a bit strange and sometimes what people think about me gets me down, but in those situations I find comfort in the familiar.
So like me, when you’ve had a bad day, are feeling self-conscious or just plain bad, do what the song says and simply remember YOUR favorite things – maybe you won’t feel so crappy.
