Tik Toks, Game of Thrones and political statements: A recap of the Emmys 2019

The 71st annual Emmy awards premiered Sunday night at 7:00 p.m. The Emmys honor excellence in various categories for the television industry.

Between the Tik Tok made on stage, LASIK eye surgery glasses worn by presenters, an appearance of Amazon’s “Alexa” and the unexpected category wins, the award show was worth the three hours I spent pushing off studying for my APUSH quiz I had the next morning.

Following the Oscars, the 2019 Emmy awards show did not have a host. Instead, according to Fox Ceo Charlie Collier, they wanted to use the time a host would normally take up to focus on some of America’s favorite shows and producers that were finishing a series this year.

“Game of Thrones” led this year’s nominees, yet again, with 32 nominations. Being the most nominated drama of all time, they stand with 57 Emmy wins. For their eighth and final season, Peter Dinklage received “Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series” and the whole cast won “Outstanding Drama Series.”

Other notable wins included:

“Competition Program”: “RuPaul’s Drag Race”

“Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie”: Patricia Arquette, “The Act”

“Variety Sketch Series”: “Saturday Night Live”

“Lead Actor in a Drama Series”: Billy Porter, “Pose”

To focus on the specialty shows, the Emmys included a slideshow nearly halfway through the awards, highlighting some of the top shows that have finished production in this past year. Among these featured were “Game of Thrones,” “Big Bang Theory” and “The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”

A performance by singer Halsey was another addition to the Emmys In-Memoriam tribute this year. In her cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time,” late actors, actresses and producers like Cameron Boyce and Luke Perry were honored.

While the full three hour program didn’t always have me on the edge of my seat, the polished statement outfits did.

Here’s my “Best Dressed” of the night:

Billy Porter:

A newbie to the Emmys, Porter was dressed in a silver and black striped suit. He went bold with the accessory of a hat that extended a foot to the left of his head.

Kristin Cavallari:

Cavallari chose a strapless lemon yellow dress, with a slit on the left rising to her hip. She paired her outfit with a pair of heels, matching the dress perfectly.

Sterling K. Brown:

Brown opted for a dark red coat and matching bowtie. He matched it with a pair of teardrop-shaped black sunglasses for the carpet.

Angelica Ross:

One of my favorites of the night, Ross wore a pastel pink, sheer and miniature flower studded dress that dragged along the carpet. Over her shoulder laid a delicate pink cape that followed her for the night.

Justin Hartley:

Hartley dressed in a royal blue suit with matching pants. Paired was a black bow tie, shoes and collar — he looked sleek and professional for the night.

This year’s Emmys had its fair share of predictable wins, successful moments for lesser-known celebrities and producers, awkward presenter skits and bold political speeches from winners like Alex Borstein and Patricia Arquette.

One thing I know for sure — if I’m ever nominated for an Emmy, I’ll be sure to practice my “gracious losing face” so I don’t look rude to my competitors on national television.
