The 2018 Prom theme was announced to be circus in a Student Council Meeting on March 21. It will be titled “The Greatest Show on Earth” inspired by the movie “The Greatest Showman.” The junior class Student Council decorated the meeting room with streamers, wore top hats and handed out beads and cotton candy, according to StuCo class sponsor Jennifer Hair.
“[With the circus theme,] everywhere you turn there’s something new,” Hair said. “You want to feel like you’re entertained from the moment you step foot into Union Station to midnight when everyone leaves. There’s something new around every corner, something surprising, something that just takes you back to remember what a fun time in your life this is.”
After looking through themes from previous years and brainstorming fresh ideas, the junior class narrowed it down to two themes: space and circus. The final vote was almost unanimously in favor of the circus theme, according to junior class treasurer Tom Joyce.
“It was just a voting process,” Joyce said. “A lot more people thought a circus Prom would be better than a space Prom.”
Now that the theme has been announced, the junior class Student Council, who are responsible for planning the Prom each year, is focused primarily on fundraising. They are hoping to raise over $10,000 to pay for the venue at Union Station and to hire professional decorators and performers for the event, Joyce said. The junior class has been hosting various restaurant nights including Chipotle and Pizzeria Locale, where some of the proceeds from the evening are donated to the Prom, as well as sending out donation requests to local businesses and the parents of current juniors.
Joyce has seen a mostly positive response to the the theme announcement, but Hair suspects there will be an even greater reaction once posters are hung up around the school.
“I’m really excited,” junior Sophia Scarlett said. “The idea that it’s going to be circus-themed after the new movie is cool. You don’t really know what to expect.”
Prom will be held at Union Station from 9 p.m. to midnight on May 5. Tickets will be $40 in advance and $50 at the door. Scholarship tickets will be given to students who are unable to meet the price, according to Joyce.
