2013-2014 SHARE Projects Announced

This week, students can sign up for SHARE projects in the cafeteria. The 2013-2014 SHARE Execs are Kaleigh Frigon, Claire Gilman, Spencer Jones, Alex Maday, Erin McGinley, Johnnie Norton and Mitch Tyler. The SHARE projects are as follows:

Freshmen Only:

Freshmen Connection: A variety of “Freshmen Only” projects are planned to get freshmen involved in volunteering

Tutoring:

Headstart: Students work with pre-school children

Reach Out and Read: Volunteers help with reading skills

Upper Room: Volunteers help with homework and reading at this after-school program run by the Saint-Louis Baptist Church north of the Plaza

YMCA Stars: Students provide tutoring in elementary schools

Youth:

Art At Corinth: Students assist children with a variety of art projects at Corinth Elementary
Carnivals Are Elementary: Students help with grade school carnivals

Children’s Place: Volunteers trick-or-treat with children who go to the Children’s Place, an organization for abused and neglected kids

Children’s TLC: Volunteers work with children with disabilities

Ninos de El Centro: Student colunteers assist with the preschool at El Centro

Operation Breakthrough: Students work at Operation Breakthrough, a center that helps underprivileged kids and their families all throughout the year

Older Adults:

Brighton Gardens: SHARE volunteers participate in a variety of fun, intergenerational activities with their senior neighbors down the street.

Village Shalom: Students provide entertainment for elderly residents at Village Shalom

Sports:

Girls on the Run: Running program as a way to build self-esteem in young girls. Women only.

Hoop Dreams: Students play basketball with boys from the Gillis home. Men only.

Groundhog Run: Students help with this 5k/10k race to benefit TLC, a facility for children with disabilities

Kick It At Maddie Rhodes: Volunteers play soccer with inner city youth

Trolley Run: Students help staff with the annual Trolley Run

Sort and Pack

BackSnack: Volunteers help pack backpacks full of food for low income children to have over the weekend when they are not in school

Harvesters: Students sort donated food at the Harvesters warehouse

JFS Food Pantry: Students sort and stock donated food at the Jewish Community Center

Village Food Pantry: Students help with unloading and stocking food at this pantry

Make and Bake

Dye for Haiti: Tie dye activities bring attention to the devastation in Haiti

Ronald McDonald House: Volunteers make meals for families

Shelters

Rose Brooks: Volunteers assist in a variety of ways with abused women and families staying at these shelters. Women only.

Sheffield Place: Volunteers assist at this homeless shelter

Special Populations

Downs’ Guild: Students work with Downs’ Syndrome youth in a variety of projects and events

Farmer’s House: Volunteers assist with a variety of projects in this program that teaches vocational skills to youth and adults with developmental disabilities

Special Olympics: Student volunteers assist special needs children in a variety of sports

Drives

Better Than a Trash Bag: Volunteers collect new and gently used “suitcases” for homeless kids who must move from place to place

Dress It Up: Volunteers provide “gently used” prom dressed at very discounted rates

Project Warmth: Students conduct a drive to collect warm clothes for families in need during the winter months

Soles4Souls: Shoes are collected for those in need

Souper Bowl of Caring: Students run a food drive sponsored by the Kansas City Chiefs around Super Bowl time

Awareness

Headstrong for Jake: Students demonstrate bike safety and encourage wearing helmets at various events and festivals

Breast Cancer: Cancer awareness and education through a variety of events

Try to Walk in Her Shoes: Guys wear high heels and relay race around a track during an SME soccer game, bringing awareness about abused women

Assorted

American Royal: Volunteers assist in a variety of activities at the American Royal

Children of the Dominican: Students organize a “dog walk” to benefit a school in the Dominican

Deanna Rose: Students assist with various activities at this Overland Park Childrens’ farmstead

Puppy Pals: Students try to increase adoption of unwanted pets

Salvation Army: Students ring bells in support of the Salvation Army
