WIN for KC

The undefeated girls golf state champions were honored at a luncheon hosted last Thursday by the nonprofit organization, Win for KC. The annual fundraising luncheon assists the organization in achieving their goal of empowering women to play sports.

The luncheon included the girls golf team in the March of Champions, which recognizes the elite girls’ teams in Kansas and Missouri that take home a state championship. According to Events Manager Mallory Cage, Win for KC honors the champions to highlight their achievements in the community.

“We hope that all of the student-athletes that attend the luncheon leave feeling accomplished and inspired. WIN for KC believes that participating in sports not only helps women and girls, but the entire community,” said Cage.

It was so fun. It was a little nerve racking with so many people there.” said Sophomore Varsity golfer Julia Stopperan.

“It’s nice to be recognized for all of their efforts and sacrifices.  It was the best season we have had under my 20 year watch and with a great group of ‘kids’. You can’t ask for anything more,” said golf coach Ermanno Ritschl.

Going into state, the team was determined to take home the program’s fifth state championship. It was the hours of practice and relentless effort that gave the team an undefeated season.

“Winning creates winners. Going undefeated throughout the regular season and winning Regional made us confident that the state championship was ours to take.” Ritschl said.

Win for KC advocates the lifetime value that sports bring to women’s lives. They provide women with opportunities in all sports and promote sports for girls that otherwise would not be available.

“By providing opportunities to learn a new sport, it allows many women and girls the chance to reap the benefits of sports,” said Cage.

The luncheon is not something new for Shawnee Mission East teams. Last year the swimming and tennis were honored after winning the state championship.
