Weekly Sports Update: Week 6

Girls Tennis
The Lady Lancers had a pretty quiet week leading into districts today. The only match they had took place on Tuesday, and they were able to beat Lawrence High 5-3. Friday, they will face other teams from around the Sunflower League in Lawrence in the district qualifier for the state meet. After a very strong regular season and winning league, the Lady Lancers will be the favorite to win districts and put themselves in a good spot heading into state next week.

Girls Golf
The Lancers competed their Sunflower League on Wednesday at St. Andrew’s Golf Course.   The team took second after Olathe Northwest for the title.  The windy conditions resulted in higher scores during the tournament.  Junior Anne Willman had the best score for the team with a 79 followed by sophomore Jessica Young who shot 83.  The Lancers look to defend their regional title again this year at Alvamar Golf Course in Lawrence.

Football
Last night the Lancers got back on the winning track and beat Lawrence Free State 14-12.  Next Friday night at the Blue Valley Activity Center the Lancers start their run towards the playoffs as districts begin.  Blue Valley North is a sub par team that if the Lancers come out with their A game should have little trouble with.  The week after that is the second Nut Cup with rival SM West.  Last season was the first time in years that the Lancers won both of the Nut Cup games.  After that for the final regular season game of the year the Lancers play district rival SM South.  If the Lancers are able to win two out of three of those games then they will be in good shape for the playoffs.

Cross Country
After spending a week a rough and windy weekend in Chicago last weekend, the boys team is looking to find their footing after a disappointing showing. They placed 16th, while the girls team placed fifth, their best finish ever at the Loyola Invitational. This weekend, many of the varsity members are getting the Haskell Invitational race off, in order to rest for the upcoming league race at Rim Rock Farm. For the boys, only five seniors, Ben Randolph, Jack Howland, Jake McCoy, Joe Lewis and Matt Gannon are running. The girls roster is also an all senior lineup of Kellie Johnson, Kiki Sykes, Emily Kerr, Lilly Stalder, Katie Crawford and Christa McKittrick. It will be interesting to see if this coaching decision ends up paying off in the long run.

Soccer
To start this week, the Lancers took on Blue Valley Northwest, arguable their toughest game yet. The boys found themselves in a 2-0 deficit early in the second half, but managed to tie it back up at two before halftime. The Lancers took the momentum and got a winning goal deep into the second half from junior Tyler Rathbun. The Lancers continued their undefeated season on Tuesday with a win against SM South. The Lancers ran away with this game scoring four goals to South’s one. However, Thursday the long win streak came to an end. The Lancers lost to Olathe Northwest on a questionable goal 1-0. Next week the Lancers hope to bounce back against Kansas City Christian on Monday, then a big League game against SM Northwest.
