Saturday Sept. 21 is the annual Prairie Elementary School 5K run. This will be the third annual Prairie Pride 5K Run to benefit the Prairie Fund Educational Foundation. The registration fee will include a t-shirt, and provide breakfast after the run.

The Prairie Fund is a nonprofit organization that provides additional educational services to enhance student learning at Prairie. In the past they have provided funding for Prairie to have a full-time nurse, a reading specialist and a part-time counselor.

Money is brought in through registration fees and businesses that sponsor the event. Registration costs $22 before Sept. 9, then was raised to $25. Registering after Fri. 20 will cost $30. Sponsors this year include Elite Sports Medicine, STANDEES, Pec Electrical Contracting and Chick-fil-A.

East Students Clara Martin and Shaon Borosha are volunteering at the event.

“I went to Prairie and I can get a couple CAS [Community, Action, Service hours required for International Baccalaureate] hours, so I’m looking forward to it,” junior Clara Martin said.

Pre-race stretching and line-up will begin at 7:30 am on Saturday. Runners will have the option of participating in the 5K run starting at 8:30 am, or they can choose to walk or run a 1 mile race at 8:00 am. After the race there will be food provided by Einstein Bagel, TCBY, Foo’s and Liberty Fruit.
