Two Girls One Craft: DIY Mugs

It’s just an average morning for the typical East student: scrolling through their Twitter feed, drooling with coffee in the corner of their desk about to pass out. What’s becoming new are the tweets. It’s fall, the temperatures getting cooler, the drinks are getting hotter, “Common White Girls” excessively tweets about the ever so delicious, Pumpkin Spice Lattes are poppin’. And no matter how many times I read the same tweet over and over again, I always begin to crave some caffeine. If I could have a cup of coffee in my hands 24/7 I totally would, but who wants to be carrying around that clichè Starbucks cup? Especially when they can’t get your name right. “Hailey” not “Hallie”. Cm’on barista get it right! So toss the iconic cup and get to crafting, because we’ve got something every “Common East Girl” will love.

Yes, this may be the easiest DIY project- no this IS the easiest project….ever. Really, the hardest thing to do is having the motivation to shut off Netflix, did you know the last and final season of Gossip Girl has arrived to Netflix? But that’s beside the point. Literally you just gotta go to any local craft store and pull ten bucks out of your pocket, the rest is up to your imagination.First things first, plain is best. No matter what it is, less is more. Those glitzed out, monogrammed, cheetah something mugs are cute and all, but lets face it, everyone wants to be hipster. Even us SMEasters. It’s a design so simple a cave man could do it. Just give him a sharpie, a plain white mug, an oven set to 350 degrees, and a latte then he’ll be all set.

Personally, when I think of design I think of a repetitive pattern and prints covering the canvas from head to toe. So thats exactly what I did. Letting the Sharpie take control and setting my OCD aside, my mug turned out sorta like I expected. As for Katie, my trusty side-kick in all things Do It Yourself, she went for the more urban look. Just one simple point of focus and a splash of shine, Katie created something straight out of a hipsters kitchen cabinet.

Although it was nothing like the mugs we see on Pinterest or displayed at Anthropologie, I’m happy to call my mug my own. I’m so happy with it in fact, I might just IndieGram it. We’ll see.

So go crazy, throw a design on and pop that sucker in the oven. Maybe try making your own Pumpkin Spice Latte yourself while the time passes, and you’ll have your very own “Common White Mug”. #enjoy

Materials:

1 Sharpie permanent marker (any color you please)

An oven set to 350 degrees fahrenheit

2 plain white porcelain mugs

FYI: these mugs are not dishwasher safe so if you would like to keep these bad boys forever buy markers made specifically for porcelain mug drawing, like Pebeo.

Steps:

I really don’t think it could get as easy as this:

1. Set your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit

2. Get all your supplies together and find a place to discover your inner Picasso

3. Doodle your heart out

4. Set your mugs in the oven for 30 minutes

5. Let cool unless you want to burn your tongue off

6. Last but not least, show off that rockin mug of yours that will make even Starbucks jealous
