Blog: The Newest, Cutest Way to Waste Your Time

I recently discovered the coolest Tumblr/Instagram/book/documentary series ever. This is barely an exaggeration. Being the kind person I am, when I find something this neat, I have to share it with everyone I know.

The blog is called “Maddie on Things.” Started by documentary photographer Theron Humphrey, Maddie on Things is a catalogue of Humphrey and his dog Maddie’s adventures across the country. The project began unintentionally after Humphrey embarked on a photography project called “This Wild Idea” — his plan to travel across all 50 states while photographing one person every day and telling their stories through photos and interviews.

This Wild Idea” covered over 66,000 miles of territory and Humphrey took more than 91,000 photos of people and their lives. But before his journey even began Humphrey picked up a partner. Adopted from a shelter in his home-state of Georgia, Maddie the coonhound became Humphrey’s travel buddy and soon inspired a second project to pursue while working on “This Wild Idea.”

After taking a quick shot of Maddie standing on his truck, Humphrey discovered that his new sidekick had incredible balance. This inspired “Maddie on Things.” On his Instagram and Tumblr you can see Maddie balancing on four cans, standing on a horse and even confidently purchased on a basketball hoop.

Maddie’s incredible balance has led to over 150 photos, a book deal and now a book tour. “Maddie on Things: A Super Serious Project about Dogs and Physics” contains all the photos from her 365 day tour around the 50 states.

Now Humphrey and Maddie are moving onto an even more important project: “Why We Rescue.” Once again, Maddie and Humphrey will be hopping into their van and driving across the country, this time documenting the stories of people who have rescued animals from shelters, all while doing a book signing tour.

“Maddie On Things” is not only “awww” inducing, but is inspiring people all around the country to rescue dogs and proving that shelter dogs are just as good, just as trainable and just as beautiful as any other.
