Students With Jobs In High School

Junior year high school is probably the time when most students think about getting a job. They are all of legal age to work, and most of them are driving and need the money for gas or insurance.

“I got enough money and bought my own car, pay for my insurance, food, clothes and gas,” junior Alex Konrath said. “But five nights a week I’m working, not enjoying myself, and then coming home to do homework from school, AKA my second job that I’m at every day for six hours.”

Alex works at the Price Chopper near Mission Road. He works right after school until 9 p.m. during the school days and on weekends from 3-8 p.m. He goes through a lot of stress holding a job and trying to get good grades in school. He gets plenty of money and says having a job is worth it for his future.

Having a job helps have extra money for college and allows students to start learning good money habits before and during college. It might give the student an idea of what they want to do when they graduate high school and gives them experience in working world. Sophomore Emma Allegri says having a job in high school can also teach responsibility with having money.

“I have to pay for half of my college, so I need to make the money somehow. However, I feel like there is some people whom its just not helping to learn budgeting and other things. I have friends who use every paycheck for clothes and things they don’t need, and I have to admit does bother me. I think jobs are good to learn real life skills, they just need to be use that way,” Emma said.

Junior Haley Huffaker said for her having jobs, like babysitting or teaching at her moms day care, comes with a lot of stress. Instead of hanging out with friends all the time and she is someone who has a lot of homework after school, having a job gives her less time to get that done. It also interferes with her grades. She puts grades before everything.

“Having a job in high school is terrible. My parents told me I needed to get a job because I wasn’t involved in anything, and ever since I’ve started working my life has been so much more stressful. My grades aren’t what they used to be. I always have to work on the weekends, and I don’t get to spend much time with my family. Sure I’m making money and learning how to spend it correctly, but its almost not even worth it,” Huffaker said.

Sometimes having a job is a good thing for students. Making them feel superior and worth something. Working for money and making it can benefit into the future. Other times it can put a lot of stress on students in high school. It just depends on who you are and what kind of student you are.
