Boys Swim & Dive Take Second at State

This weekend Shawnee Mission East boys swimming placed second at the state meet. The Lancers were unable to defend their state title, which was claimed by Wichita East who scored 308 points while the Lancers scored 274.

Coming into the meet a first place finish was expected but after the first day of prelims a trophy seemed out of the question.

“[In] prelims we didn’t do as well as everyone hoped. They weren’t doing what they wanted to do or getting what they needed,” junior Zack Holbrook said.

The Lancers were able to improve their standings with several first place finishes in both the A and B finals, along with other swimmers placing in their events. Senior Troy Demoss won the 200 yard Individual Medley with a time of 1:53.86.

The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Jackson Granstaff, Troy Demoss, Chris Watkins and Zack Holbrook, also took first. In the B finals junior Jackson Granstaff took first in the 50 yard freestyle and senior Chris Watkins in the 100 yard freestyle.

Other Lancers placed in their individual events and on relay teams. Multiple second place and third place finishes, along with several fourth place finishes, and a fifth, seventh and eighth finish, helped the lancers to clinch second place.

“Overall, I think the team did absolutely incredible,” Demoss said. “They are all really good guys and they all work so hard, so it was awesome to see all their hard work pay off finally.”
