This past weekend on Friday, Feb. 28 and Saturday, March 1, the wrestling state tournament was held at Hartman Arena in Wichita, Kan. East had a total of six wrestlers competing at state. Sophomore Michael Aldrich (120 lbs), senior Grant Hollingsworth (126 lbs), senior Chris Rodrigues (132 lbs), junior Marshall Green (152 lbs), senior Kenny Siegal (160 lbs) and sophomore Jack Carter (195 lbs).

Only the top two schools place as a team, but wrestlers can also place individually. Garden City placed first, winning the state tournament for the second year in a row, and Derby placed second.

Senior Grant Hollingsworth was the only East wrestler who placed, placing third in the 126 lbs division. Hollingsworth beat Olathe Northwest wrestler Doug Newcomb, who had previously beat him for the Sunflower League Championship two weeks ago.

“When I won my match to get third it was a very emotional moment for me,” Hollingsworth said. “Even though I feel like I could’ve done better, I am still proud of how I finished.”
