The top 15 tennis players from every school competed on Saturday in the Shawnee Mission School District (SMSD) Tournament.  East won the event with 39 points, one away from the best possible score of 40.

Every SMSD school ranked their top five singles players and top five doubles teams to play against other school’s identically ranked players.  After each player played one match against each of the other four high schools, a point was awarded for every match a school won to determine overall district winners.  East’s teams won every match they played excluding one forfeit after an East doubles team arrived late to the site, denying East a perfect score at districts.

Northwest took second, 11 points behind East.  West, South and North took the final three spots.  The North team won a single match on Saturday.

“We have a very deep team as opposed to the other schools,” junior Noah Marsh said. “We maintained good composure.”

Senior Brooks Kendall won the overall singles title, and the doubles team of junior Reese Goulding  and senior Jamie McDonald won the district doubles title.

“It was a very good representation of our school,” junior Michael Kraft said.

The district competition does not have an effect on the post season play.  The top six players from each school will progress to the league meet.
