Recap: Boys’ Soccer vs. Olathe South

With seconds ticking down on the Olathe South Falcons, their two goals in the last seven minutes weren’t enough to give them the comeback on the Lancers, as East won 3-2 last Tuesday night.

The scoring started early, when the Olathe South keeper, trying to hit the ball away, put it at the feet of senior captain Josh Zillner, who easily put the ball away. The Lancer offense kept the attack up, pressing the ball and trying to fight it past the Olathe South backline.

But a backheel flick into the right corner of the net by senior Ari Throckmorton, broke their defense again and sent the Lancers up 2-0.

Olathe South came back from the half and immediately charged down the field. A minute in a half in, they found a South header off of a set piece sent the ball into the back of the net, as the sideline referee raised his flag; offsides.

With the goal discounted, the Lancers answered the close call. A lofted through ball found Throckmorton one-on-one with the South keeper. With a little side step, Throckmorton dribbled right by and slotted home his second goal of the night. The Lancers were up 3-0.

But set pieces started picking apart the Lancers. With under 10 minutes left, a South attacker, this time onsides, headed a cross past junior keeper Thomas Allegri. Minutes later, a juggled ball in the box was headed in again, making the match 3-2 with under five minutes left.

With a new sense of energy, the Lancer defense clamped down to hold on for a win. Their next match will be this Friday night against Leavenworth at the Shawnee Mission Soccer Complex.
