Preview: Soccer vs. Gardner Edgerton

The SME boys Varsity soccer team’s season is coming to an end. Tonight could be the last soccer game wearing a Lancer jersey for all of the senior players. They will be taking on Gardner Edgerton at the SM North stadium at 7 p.m.

The Lancers had a rough season. They played well at some points, however they also had some rough patches, according to senior forward Ari Throckmorten.

“We ended up 9-7,” Throckmorten said . “But we are definitely capable of playing better than our record suggests.”

Over the summer, the Lancers traveled to St. Louis for their annual soccer tournament. The Lancers won every game they played, creating high expectations for this season.

“We’ve had ups and downs,” junior defender Michael Mardikes said. “This team had pretty high expectations and we’ve played well, but we have struggled getting the results.”

Throughout the season the Lancers suffered from injuries, mainly concussions. From start to finish, they had a total of six players missing games and having playing restrictions due to concussions.

“Having a lot of injuries, especially concussions affected how we played as a team,” junior defender Derrick Hilliard, who suffered a concussion, said. “We had to move people around, and some guys had to play positions they weren’t used to.”
