Heat Causes Practice Rescheduling

This week’s heat has forced coaches to reschedule practices to protect athletes’ health. The heat index spiked to a high of between 98 and 103, making it an unsafe environment for all outdoor athletes.

Football has split up practice times and is having shortened practices in the morning before school and in the evening when the temperature has dropped. The girls golf team also cancelled several practices. Cross Country is currently running Monday through Thursday morning at 6 o’clock.

“It was going to be uncomfortable enough that we thought it would be more effective to work in the morning,” head Cross Country coach Michael Chaffee said.

Boys’ soccer practices remained the same, but head coach Jamie Kelly is regulating water breaks every 15 minutes to keep his players hydrated.

“We give them 5 minutes of water break, where they just sit and relax,” Kelly said. “We try to find shade if there is any at the time.”

Indoor sports such as volleyball were unaffected were able to continue practices without interruption. Outdoor coaches hope to return to regular practices as soon as the temperature returns to normal.
